The Waterfalls of the Czarny Potok in the Izera Mountains

The Waterfalls of the Czarny Potok in the Izera Mountains

For lovers of mountain cascades and swift streams, exceptional waterfalls await in the valley of the Czarny Potok (the Black Stream) – often treated as a single waterfall, considered the largest in the Izera Mountains. It is a place worth visiting for several reasons, chief among them the numerous river steps and the splendidly preserved debris-control dams, as well as the relatively easy route and the spectacular views. All of this together guarantees a great adventure in a mountain setting. What do you need to know before setting off for the Czarny Potok waterfall? How do you get there? And what attractions await us along the way?

The Czarny Potok – a tributary of the Kwisa

Before we move on to the waterfall itself, it is worth getting to know a few of the most important facts about the Czarny Potok. It is a left-bank tributary of the Kwisa and rises on the eastern slope of Smrek, one of the peaks of the High Ridge. The source of the Czarny Potok is at an altitude of about 1,055 m above sea level, while its length is about 14.5 kilometres. It runs through a deeply incised valley along the slopes of Stóg Izerski, Opaleniec, Czerniawska Kopa and Czerniawka.

The waterfalls of the Czarny Potok are located above Czerniawa-Zdrój – a district of Świeradów-Zdrój. It is precisely there, along a stretch of about 3 kilometres, that the water drops by as much as 500 metres. Wonderful views are provided here by the numerous cascades down which the water flows in swift streams. Of course, the greatest impressions can be expected after periods of intense rainfall, when large amounts of rising water rush ahead in a turbulent current.

The waterfalls of the Czarny Potok – why is it worth going?

A trip to the waterfalls of the Czarny Potok is a great idea for spending time in beautiful mountain surroundings. It is interesting because we are dealing with a complex of numerous cascades stretched over the aforementioned 3 kilometres. Viewed in this way, they are treated as a single Czarny Potok Waterfall, considered the largest waterfall in the Izera Mountains. The route along the numerous water steps is therefore far more attractive than would be the case with a single specific waterfall. In this way we have the chance to admire the beautiful landscapes for longer.

Also significant is the fact that the Czarny Potok runs through a beautiful forest with rich vegetation, which allows full immersion in nature. It is also a place very rewarding to photograph, where you can capture nature in its most beautiful form.

The route to the Czarny Potok Waterfall – Świeradów-Zdrój

The waterfall is reached by the green Czarny Potok Valley trail. Convenient access is guaranteed by joining the trail from the car park at the Myśliwska Chata lodging. The distance to the waterfalls of the Czarny Potok from the Izera Park complex is, as the crow flies, about 2 km. You can drive to Myśliwska Chata in just 7 minutes. The first waterfall is a few hundred metres from the car park. As for the walk itself, it is worth bearing in mind that there are numerous paths along the stream, but to reach some of the cascades you have to push through wilder terrain. The waterfalls on the Czarny Potok can also be visited during a hike to Stóg Izerski or Czerniawska Kopa.

The attractions of the Czarny Potok – the cascades of the Czarny Potok

Among the greatest attractions of the Czarny Potok, alongside the beautiful natural cascades formed by numerous boulders and stones, are the remains of an extensive system of debris-control and flood-control dams. They were built at the beginning of the 20th century, after the catastrophic flood that took place in July 1897. To this day, their task is to protect against the sudden rising of water in rainy periods. The system protects against floods and rockslides, while at the same time guaranteeing beautiful views of the more than century-old, moss-covered structures which, for all their charm, still fulfil their function.

As mentioned earlier, a trip to the waterfalls can successfully be combined with other tourist attractions, such as an excursion to Stóg Izerski – including a ride on the gondola lift – or a trip to Czerniawska Kopa, where a renovated wooden observation tower 15 metres high awaits, which – combined with the height of Czerniawska Kopa (776 m above sea level) – gives wonderful views of the area.

The Lower Waterfall of the Czarny Potok in the Czech Republic

An interesting fact is that a Czarny Potok Waterfall (Vodopád Černého potoka) can also be found on the Czech side of the Izera Mountains. It is a completely different place, located to the west of Świeradów-Zdrój, near the Czech town of Hejnice. The Czarny Potok Waterfall on the Czech side of the Izera Mountains is considered one of the more beautiful in the region, all thanks to its rather spectacular appearance and surroundings.

It is about 10 metres high and was formed as a result of an enormous boulder becoming wedged between rock walls. The lower waterfall is located at the foot of the Południowe Kamienie (Polední kameny) peak, in a fairly steep valley. The place where it is situated has a unique atmosphere, all thanks to the presence of tall rock blocks that make a monumental impression.
