Świeradów-Zdrój is famous for its spa traditions, an inseparable element of which is the Spa House (Dom Zdrojowy), located in the centre of the town, just 2.4 km from Izera Park. This building is known not only to those taking the cure, for it is one of Świeradów's more important tourist attractions, which also happens to have an interesting history. What do you need to know about this place and why is it worth visiting?
The Spa House in Świeradów-Zdrój – history, architecture, curiosities
The Świeradów Spa House is part of a spa complex from the end of the 19th century, located at ul. Zdrojowa 2. The complex also includes a unique and spectacular larch promenade hall 80 metres long, and a water pump room. The hall connects the two spa buildings into which the facility is divided. The present Spa House stands on the site of the old Spring House, built back in the 18th century, which unfortunately burned down in 1895.
The new Spa House was erected in 1899, to a design by the Wrocław architect Karl Grosser. As many as 600 workers were involved in building the facility. The building's architecture is very interesting and original. In the basement of the Spa House is the Museum of Spa Mining, opened in 2014 – on the 260th anniversary of the curbing of the first mineral-water springs in Świeradów. The museum offers exhibitions connected with the building's history. Interestingly, the structure of the new Spa House was also touched by tragedy. In 1970, another fire broke out, which consumed part of the fourth floor. The repair and modernisation of the facility took five years.
Spa and tourism
The Spa House stands near the main town promenade, which is also one of the town's significant tourist attractions. In the promenade hall of the Spa House, decorated with beautiful floral polychrome and stained glass, there are cafés, a tourist office, water pump rooms and souvenir shops. A characteristic feature of the Spa House is the 46-metre clock tower, which you can climb to admire the views of the surrounding Izera Mountains. The house itself still functions as a spa, offering a range of treatments based on therapeutic waters – including the unique radon waters and therapies using peat mud and infusions of spruce bark.
The Spa Park in Świeradów-Zdrój – 2.4 km from Izera Park
The Spa Park, located just 2.4 km from the Izera Park complex, was – like the Spa House – designed by Grosser and created at the same time. Alongside the Spa House, the promenade hall and the water pump room, there is a range of other interesting attractions on its grounds. The Świeradów tourist trails also pass through the park:
- the blue trail – Chatka Górzystów, Lake Pilchowickie
- the green trail – Gryfów Śląski, Stóg Izerski
- the red trail – the Main Sudetes Trail, Stóg Izerski, Szklarska Poręba, the Szrenicka Hut
Attractions of the Spa Park:
- The Artificial Grotto
- The chessboard
- The frog monument
- The Leopold Baths (currently a rheumatology centre)
- Villa Marzenie – a building in the Swiss style erected in 1901
- The terraces next to the Spa House, 160 metres long
In the park there is interesting vegetation, fountains, artificial grottoes, terraces, gardens, pergolas, ramps and retaining walls on the slopes, as well as sculptures and light illuminations. There are also secluded nooks and walking paths and benches, on which you can sit and enjoy the calm in the beautiful surroundings. The park is a very picturesque place, full of greenery, shrubs, trees and flowers. The decades-old agaves deserve particular attention.
